The Antonius Rex mystic-dark band was founded by the eclectic philosopher-composer-guitarist Antonio Bartoccetti and the experimental sound enginneer Doris Norton and is considered by the international critics as "the most authoritative band of the deeper metal dark sound". The band is characterized by the unique parapsychological style of the works, esotheric messages, fight against pollution and against any kind of war. Antonio Bartoccetti also is the founder of the Jacula cult group who released the albums "In Cauda Semper Stat Venenum", "Tardo Pede in Magiam Versus" and "Pre Viam". Among the Antonius Rex' "absolute cult" albums a special mention goes to "Neque Semper Arcum Tendit Rex" , "Praeternatural" and "Magic Ritual" (published by Warner Chappel, 2005). In the 2006 Antonius Rex releases the superb album "Switch on Dark": a composition work prolonged for two years , concepted as an extreme mystyc experience, a path for the next generations. The obscure songs in "Switch on Dark" are six, among wich there are the omonym 'Switch on Dark', the irreal fantastic 'Perpetual Adoration' (also included in the album as video clip), the terrifyc 'Darkotic' and the special 'Fairy Vision'.
In the 2009 Antonius Rex releases the esoteric album "Per Viam ".

Comporre per riempire i sacchi d’oro o... comporre per se stessi e riempire il proprio spirito? La storia è lunga... c’è chi dice “infinita”. La magia entra nella musica e nell'immagine per due vie: la prima è documentazione... si tratta di provare il fenomeno umano, di rendere perenne l’insolito. La seconda è più tortuosa... consiste nel comporre su una realtà normale ed evidenziare come in essa vi siano delle occultità, come la normalità sia irrimediabilmente folle.

Per far ciò bisogna avere un rapporto con il mondo, di distacco. Il primo documento embrionale per far comprendere che in ogni rapporto umano la verità si scopre sempre e solo alla fine è IN CAUDA SEMPER STAT VENENUM... brano cult TRIUMPHATUS SAD... una chitarra anticipatrice oggetto di infinite discussioni nel mondo (Antonio Bartoccetti: non sono un chitarrista, non riuscirei mai a suonare un brano di un altro... sono un compositore che usa la sua chitarra...).

Sulla base di un concept profetico, viene composto e inciso all’Angelicum di Milano l’album TARDO PEDE IN MAGIAM VERSUS. Quando il mondo vibra sulle chitarre rock di Clapton, di Iommi e sui ritmi devastanti dei Deep Purple i due musicisti optano per un album aritmico, senza la lead-guitar ma c’è l’avanguardia del progressive assoluto. TARDO PEDE catapulterà i due leader nella sfera aulica della sperimentazione. TARDO PEDE diventerà un vangelo destinato a restare tale per sempre.

Arriva NEQUE SEMPER ARCUM TENDIT REX... testi violenti e quasi inquisitorii, ritmo cerimonial-dark, una chitarra geniale, una voce profetica, tastiere con soluzioni anomale per l’epoca, atmosfere che la stampa internazionale definisce sinistramente uniche con riferimenti specifici alla super tematica DEVIL LETTER e a brani come AQUILA NON CAPIT MUSICAS. L’opera, prodotta da Albert Goodman sta per uscire su Vertigo label ma qualcosa di fatale avviene: i due musicisti rispettano il decreto del fato.

Fra il 1976 e 1977 la tastierista engineer Doris Norton gira un cortometraggio estremamente particolare sugli Antonius Rex, magicamente simbolico: Bartoccetti ne compone la musica, Norton cura gli arrangiamenti, siglando l’intero progetto MAGIC RITUAL che resterà congelato fino al 1990. Inizia una stasi creativa del gruppo con l’album ZORA nettamente inferiore al precedente e con il successivo RALEFUN inciso a Monaco con troppa fretta. Nel 1978 Albert Goodman e Charles Tiring abbandonano questa terra e successivamente viene pubblicato ANNO DEMONI, una raccolta di brani electronic-dark realizzata in loro memoria.

Nel 1980 gli Antonius Rex auto-producono l’album PREATERNATURAL, il loro miglior disco in assoluto fino a quel periodo.... un’opera esoterico-cerebrale dal potere avvincente ... brani cult sono l’omonimo PREATERNATURAL, l’allucinante HALLOWEEN, l’iperdark INVISIBLE FORCE e la gotica CAPTURING UNIVERSE. Dal 1980 Doris Norton inizia l’attivita’ solista realizzando album elettronici per la Apple di cui diventa testimonial e successivamente per la IBM di cui e’ consulente musicale-informatica. Nel 1985 crea per IBM il prgramma musicale MPN che trasforma il computer PC in un registratore digitale a otto tracce. Nel 1990 Doris Norton inizia le sue sperimentazioni in area techno con gli albun TECHNO SHOCK e NEXT OBJECTIVE collaborando altresì con i club più trasgressivi d’Europa e con le label Sony, Avex Trax, SOB, Virgin e naturalmente la sua Musik Research. Sempre nel 1990, Antonio Bartoccetti e Doris Norton sono nello studio rumeno di Monika Tasnad per incidere la colonna sonora del music movie MAGIC RITUAL. Nel 1995 il musicista Rexanthony, loro figlio, riprende da PRAETERNATURAL, il brano CAPTURING UNIVERSE, ne mantiene la melodia, ne cambia il ritmo, ne trasforma il titolo in CAPTURING MATRIX e raggiunge le charts europee e giapponesi. Entro il 2000 il magico family team raggiunge i sei milioni di copie con i loro brani in oltre 500 compilations internazionali.

Nel 2001 i due musicisti tornano in Romania e compongono materiale per altri nuovi album... assolutamente tematici, assolutamente mistici, assolutamente unici.... fra le composizioni di assoluto fascino, "Switch On Dark" e "Fairy Vision"... quest'ultima scritta e basata sulle 3 componenti, alias "3 P", alias pioggia-piano-porta... una suite che delinea la nuova tendenza del gruppo a creare la "A.Rex Soundvision" alias musica da vedere... un sound capace di innescare nell'ascoltatore forti emozioni visive.

Al tempo stesso concedono alla label Black Widow Records di ristampare quasi tutte le loro opere che ottengono consensi di pubblico e di critica in tutto il mondo. A fine 2004 gli Antonius Rex decidono di far riassemblare in Dvd il cult movie MAGIC RITUAL affidando tutto il progetto produttivo ed il montaggio digitale a Rexanthony che, nel proprio studio di incisione, inserisce anche nella colonna sonora originale un'eclettica improvvisazione di piano progressive.

Sempre nel 2004 cominciano ad incidere nel loro studio l’allucinante album S.O.D.... alias Switch On Dark, che emerge dalle nebbie del bosco nel 2006. Nell'autunno 2005 danno vita all'album (solo su vinile) dal titolo "Magic Ritual" (Published by Warner) contenente sul lato A il soundtrack originale e sul lato B una speciale versione di "Fairy Vision". E dopo anni di attesa ecco "Switch On Dark".... il viaggio nell'occulto attraverso sei scene musicali che innescano visioni. La band, sempre in controcorrente, decide di farlo ascoltare prima della sua uscita ad addetti, fans e gente di varia stazione sociale. Gli ascolti di "Switch On Dark" iniziano il 25 Febbraio 2006. L'opera "sigillata" nei formati LP vinile (only for collectors), CD e Digipack inizia la fase di export nel Giugno 2006, per entrare in distribuzione fisica e worldwide digitale nel Settembre 2006. I formati CD e Digipack contengono il video scritto e diretto dalla tastierista Doris Norton, costruito sul brano di apertura "Perpetual Adoration" i cui diritti musicali sono stati acquisiti da Rai Trade. Al tempo stesso, il mercato americano, dove gli Antonius Rex nell'ultimo biennio hanno visto crescere esponenzialmente il numero dei loro seguaci, si è assicurato attraverso la Century Media, la distribuzione esclusiva di "Switch On Dark".

Incredibly, the legend of Antonius Rex continues strong with a new album 40 years after the first Jacula release in 1969. "Per Viam" is the new studio album from Antonio Bartoccetti and Doris Norton picking up where 2006's "Switch on Dark" left off. The long running husband/wife compositional team is joined this time out by drummer Florian Gorman, medium Monika Tasnad, and their son Rexanthony. Along with "Switch," the pair is at the top of their game, producing the most exciting music they have made since the early 1970s. The darkness remains of course but the sound is almost post-modern, pushing the boundaries with a mixture of styles and textures that make them hard to compartmentalize. The moods and feelings invoked by self-proclaimed "Mysticdrug for the next generation" are always in conflict: fear and darkness in one moment, and a strange calming peace in the next. They are certainly a much different trip than the "next big thing" release proclaimed by the big prog sites and should appeal to those fans who always claim to be looking for something different. Rex proves that simple melodies and hooks can be just as satisfying to proggers than a bunch of avant manic thrashing. For those who know only the 1970s Jacula/Rex sound, the modern Antonius Rex is very much updated but also holds dear a bit of the traditional sounds. Their last two albums feature mixtures of high energy, industrial-techno rock with traditional symphonic piano, synth, and organ melodies. Add in vocals that can be either spoken word or sung, male, female, or choirs, and you have a sound that is rich, luxurious, sensual, decadent, and yes.....very dark. "Per Viam" overall seems to have a bit more bite than "Switch." Whereas "Switch" seemed to have sections with beguiling melodies sung by females and accompanied by piano, "Per Viam" has more crunching SG guitar, more male vocals, a bit more venom. Think of taking the proto-Goth organ and mystic vocals of Jacula but injecting it with some Nine Inch Nails attitude. "Micro Demons" opens the album with a monstrous, sludgy chords and the horrific screams of actual demons bringing you face to face with a wraith. Soon Doris brings some nice keys in for balance. "Per Viam" is all about tension with a march style drum beat and frantic simulated strings, you feel as if you are being chased. Suddenly Antonio busts into the first of many fine solos and it is a joy to hear this man wail better than ever after all these years. He is often compared to Sabbath/Iomni by writers and I can tell you he is every bit as talented as Tony is, conveying great darkness with his chords and knocking out some nasty good solos. "Woman of the King" is our first chance to catch our breath, a lovely 9 minute elaboration of keyboard soundscapes by Doris. Soon the loveliness is crushed by the ever present darkness lurking around every corner, here we can hear some unfortunate soul meeting what sounds like an awful demise to Antonio's narration. From there it moves into a steamy metal section with good chugging, heavy drumming and choirs over female gasps....getting a bit Therion here....hell yeah!! "Spectra" is typical Rex sound vision with lots of effects and some hyper-metal soloing by Antonio over various beats. "Angels and Demons" would be the easy choice for a single, a beautifully constructed track with many layers: choir-vocals over heavy guitar riffs alternating with acoustic guitar and piano. For the last two tracks the album shifts gears and looks to the past. First, we are treated to a remake of Jacula's "UFDEM" which reminds me all over again why I LOVE the voice of Doris Norton. God she sings beautifully. Here the original 1972 vocal is given the pure heavy metal treatment with loud guitar. I much prefer the original arrangement to be honest, but I'd listen to Doris no matter the circumstances. Then we have an interesting 11 minute piece fully titled "Antonius Rex Prophecy: Tiring original prophecy 1948:61st Anniversary Edition." Hmmm....since Charles Tiring has been dead for years, his writing credit here is presumably for an old idea. Although if anyone could arrange to work with a dead man, it would be Antonio, so perhaps he was channeled. The track is a long narration by Antonio over serene keyboards and some guitar in parts, a more peaceful ending to the album. The final closing guitar solo by Antonio is simply beautiful and majestic. Recommended to any fan of dark prog. A bonus CD-ROM video of "Micro Demons" is included, and the even better video for "Angels and Demons" can be viewed at their website. The tri-fold digipak design comes with wonderful artwork, the cover art is among their most memorable ever. This album and "Switch on Dark" are easy recommendations for anyone wishing to sample the modern Rex. I certainly hope this is not the last we hear from this duo who seem to be experiencing a renaissance of creativity.

After the impressive "Switch on Dark" (2006) and the esoteric doom "Per Viam" (2009) based on mystic songs composed between 2007-2008 by Antonio Bartoccetti and Doris Norton, the Antonius Rex band, releases the new album "Hystero Demonopathy". This new shocking album "Hystero Demonopathy" (2012) once again analyses the invisible forces and demonic and hysteric possensions. The new band's keyboardist, the musician Rexanthony, plays keyboards, piano, variuos synthesizers, sets drum machines lines and arranges.
The "Hystero Demonopathy" album exudes a series of no rational blue-black visions, sometimes heavenly, sometimes terrifying, making each vision available to the listener for reaching a transcendental fusion. The mortals, listening to the album, get a praeternatural power and become able to live free, away from useless, meaningless and alienating problems of the daily life. The leader (composer and guitarist) Antonio Bartoccetti, as for the previous album, first wrote the video screenplay for each track, then composed the audio tracks and recorded all the album: all the work lasted 9 months. "Hystero Demonopathy" is the result of an esoteric research, made by Antonio Bartoccetti, on DEMONIC HYSTERIA, considered as a psychiatric event by some people and as esoteric-magic by others. Historically a psichiatric disorder or demonic esoteric disorder is marked by excitability, irritability, dark confusion, mystic demonomania, misbehavior and emotional extremes, occurring mainly in possessed women. From the point of view of music "Hystero Demonopathy" is a multisound-multistyles of concentrate fusion: gothic, classic, post-classic, dark, doom, metal, impressionist, progressive, post-progressive, after-rock.... with micro electronic inventions and perseverant events.
